Floor Preparation

As with all projects, the final finish is governed by the floor preparation which is devised to produce the best surface to give the bond for the many final floor finishes to suit any particular project.

Evenfloors Ltd has all it's own specialist equipment to provide the preparation required.

1. Shot blasting is the best form of preparation as it is dust free and provides a clean open surface for an excellent bond for cementitious or resin applications.
2. Scabbling is a mechanical preparation system, which can be used to remove heavily contaminated concrete or screed by removing several mm.
3. Diamond grinding either by hand held machines or triple headed S.T.R. grinders will provide surfaces not accessible to shot blasting or scabbling, such as perimeters of walls and corners. Grinding can also be used to remove minor problems such as trowel marks in screeds, prior to final floor finish being applied.

Priming

All modern systems require specialist-priming materials to suit the application concerned.

1. Cementitious screeds. Evenfloors Ltd pump polymer modified screeds from 5mm upwards. These require the concrete substrate to be primed after preparation with a dispersal of styrene acrylate polymer and water. A two coat system is recommended by manufacturers first coat being at a rate of 1-5 which allows good penetration into the substrate and a second coat at 1-3 which gives an excellent bond.
2. Resin applications for epoxy screeds polyurethane and self-levelling systems. These require a suitable resin primer applicable to the product being laid. Usually manufacturers will specify a system for each screed being laid.
3. Resin primers being used to provide a bond with any cementitious products require to be totally blinded with a dry silica sand preferably with a 0.7 - 1.2 aggregate.
4. Resin D.P.M. systems. All manufacturers produce their own products. Some are a one coat and some are two coat systems. As necessary, the second coat can be blinded with silica sand.

Pump Screeds - Industrial

These are polymer modified cementitious products, which range from base screeds, which contain larger aggregates to fill in deep areas to topping systems which the majority require a seal coat, as being cementitious, they are porous. Evenfloors Ltd always recommends a coat of water based epoxy followed by a coat of high build.

Pump Screeds - Commercial

Often these screeds are used to refurbish existing concrete substrates with an application of 6mm+ to provide a suitable surface for vinyl, carpet, wood and tiling floor finishes.

Pumpable screeds are a fast and efficient method of laying large areas very quickly and the polymer-modified systems allow faster application of final floor finishes, than standard sand and cement screed. In addition, specialist polymer modified cementitious screeds can be laid onto central heating systems much thinner than conventional screeds.

Resin Screeds

These systems are extremely hard wearing and can be made with epoxy or polyurethane bases. All manufacturers produce a range of products, which can vary in thickness and finish. Some materials are produced to provide:

1. Thermal shock. i.e in areas of changes in temperature or if pressure-washing systems are used.
2. Anti static systems for computer areas.
3. Heavy industrial areas.
4. Commercial areas such as shops and precincts.

Hand trowels install these products and large areas can be laid using a skid system and trowelled to close down the screed.

Resin Coatings

These products are widely used throughout industry and provide a fast way of producing a clean attractive finish in a choice of different colours.

Areas in factories can be designated with different colours such as gangways and permanent lining systems can enhance the look of factory and commercial premises.

Anti slip systems can also be installed using resin coatings by the addition of fine aggregates or bauxite back rolled into the final coat.
